Award-Winning Program Helps Apprentices Move the World Forward

Learn more about Spirit’s award-winning apprenticeship program from people involved with it first-hand.

“Cobblers had apprentices, clockmakers had apprentices, even the emperor in Star Wars – Darth Vader was his apprentice,” said Michael Hiebert, electrical maintenance lead at Spirit AeroSystems and IBEW vice chairman. “Apprentices have been around to learn how to do something forever.”

At Spirit, we believe apprenticeships have the power to ignite change. They can take skills and expertise to the next level and provide a foundation you can stand on well into the future. But we’re not talking about an apprenticeship that just lasts a summer. It’s not a plug to ply your trade for pennies. We’re talking about one that is meaningful.

Spirit has always been a company that strives on safety and advanced technology. Getting the opportunity to train, and learn about the technology, and aeronautics, was an awesome opportunity for me and my family.

Our apprenticeship program won the statewide and regional 2022 Apprenticeship Champions and Partners Award from the Kansas Department of Commerce. It’s based on the belief that the work we do moves people, communities, and the world forward – and that apprentices are a vital part in doing so. It’s an opportunity to learn and train with seasoned mentors.

“I feel like I’ve learned more here in two years than I did in two years of college,” said Austin Lake, a mechanical maintenance apprentice in Spirit’s program. “It’s definitely been a great experience, and I really enjoy it.”

And on top of that, it’s an opportunity to be compensated for advancing your skills.

It’s my hope that programs like the Spirit Apprenticeship program can get more people interested in the technical fields and in manufacturing in general. There’s little that’s more rewarding than a tangible job well done.

“This is a real full-time job with benefits and insurance and vacation, and all that stuff. But we’re going to pay for you to go to school, and we’re going to pay for you to go through this training,” said Cristin Boyle, NC programming manager.

It’s a program that fuels both personal and professional growth. It gives you the tools, the education and the knowledge you need to join a long line of experienced professionals looking to build the future.

Spirit offers some amazing apprenticeship programs that offer individuals a career path. So, if one of the programs they offer is what you are looking for as an individual take the opportunity they offer and run with it.
