Spirit AeroSystems Voices Support for the Aeronautics Innovation Act of 2019
Spirit AeroSystems [NYSE: SPR] issued the following statement in support of the Aeronautics Innovation Act (S. 1713) as introduced by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA). The bill authorizes an official collaboration project between the aerospace industry and NASA through the creation of the Advanced Structures, Materials and Manufacturing Program.
“We applaud Sen. Moran and Sen. Warner for introducing the Aeronautics Innovation Act and for supporting efforts of the aerospace industry to design and certify the next generation of aircraft,” said Spirit AeroSystems President and CEO Tom Gentile. “Spirit supports further collaboration between industry, NASA and other federal stakeholders. We look forward to participating in this new program.”
The legislation acknowledges the success of NASA’s Advanced Composites Project (ACP) that created the Advanced Composites Consortium, of which Spirit is a member. The ACP is scheduled to conclude at the end of fiscal year 2019. The Advanced Structures, Materials and Manufacturing Program would help industry drastically reduce the time and cost for designing, manufacturing and certifying aircraft using nontraditional composite materials and manufacturing processes.
The bill provides for a 50 percent federal cost share for applicable research and calls for collaboration with other federal agencies.
