Spirit AeroSystems Voices Support for NASA Authorization Act
WICHITA, Kan., Nov. 13, 2019 – Spirit AeroSystems [NYSE: SPR] issued the following statement in support of the NASA Authorization Act of 2019 (S. 2800) that would authorize the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology Program. One of the bill’s provisions would grant NASA the authority to create an official collaboration project with the aerospace industry and academia that would build upon progress made by the Advanced Composites Consortium, of which Spirit is a Tier-1 member.
“We applaud Sen. Moran for including authorizing language in the Senate Commerce Committee’s NASA bill to establish the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology Program,” said Spirit AeroSystems Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer John Pilla. “This program would support the aerospace industry’s efforts to more rapidly design and certify the next generation of aircraft at a lower cost. Spirit looks forward to participating in the program and providing value for NASA by leveraging our expertise industrializing composite materials.”
S.2800 would authorize NASA to establish a federal cost share program for applicable research and calls for NASA to collaborate with academia, commercial aviation and aerospace manufacturers. The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation approved S. 2800 Nov. 13.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) originally proposed the advanced materials program as part of the Aeronautics Innovation Act (S. 1713) they introduced June 4, 2019.
