Carlos and Katya will have a warm new home for the holidays. Just in time for the end of the year, Spirit AeroSystems dedicated a completed Wichita Habitat for Humanity home build for a family in need of safe, affordable housing. Together with the new homeowners, Wichita Spirit employees completed the full build in only three months. Spirit Senior Vice President and General Manager of Boeing and Defense Programs Duane Hawkins presented Carlos and Katya with their new keys during the celebration.
“At Spirit, we’re passionate about supporting the communities where we live and work. Thanks to the work of Team Spirit volunteers, Carlos and Katya can move out of a small one-bedroom apartment with their daughter and into their own home,” said Hawkins. “Because of this partnership, Carlos and Katya have the opportunity to improve their living situation and create a better future for their family.”
Carlos and Katya’s home is in Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the Block revitalization neighborhood, an initiative to improve an area near downtown Wichita. Their house is the 25th house built since the campaign began in 2014. Through Habitat for Humanity, they were able to purchase an affordable home at 0% interest.
“Spirit AeroSystems has truly made an investment in Carlos and Katya’s future,” said Ann Fox, executive director of Wichita Habitat for Humanity. “Their daughter will benefit from a better educational experience as a result of stable housing, which will allow her to attend the same school, find security in a home she is proud of and make lifetime friends in the neighborhood. Not to mention, the lessons she is learning for her own future as an adult. We salute Spirit AeroSystems for making this significant gift that is uplifting an entire neighborhood.”
Spirit also sponsored a successful build in 2013. Spirit employees and the company contribute countless hours to nonprofit organizations in their communities every year and volunteered over 1,300 hours to complete this home build.
