Spirit making a splash in the aftermarket business
Company is now sole direct supplier, provider for aftermarket parts

After dipping its proverbial toes into the competitive waters of the global aircraft aftermarket business four years ago, teamed with established giant Aviall, Spirit has made its high-dive leap: as of December, it’s now an independent supplier and service provider.

While Spirit may seem to be taking a big bite into a new business arena amidst some big-time operators, there is plenty of logic behind the company’s move to aftermarketpicposition itself to service a piece of the international parts sales and distribution market directly. The primary reason is Spirit designs and builds the hardware. Who better knows the structure itself and what goes into the manufacturing process than the manufacturer itself? When a customer buys a part from Spirit, they are buying it from the original production supplier.

A substantial part of the aftermarket business is the MRO segment – the maintenance, repair and overhaul work done on airline fleets that fly around the clock. Since Spirit is the original production supplier, the parts are manufactured in the same facility as they have been for decades.

Over the past four years, Spirit has developed global repair stations in Wichita, Kan., Prestwick, Scotland, and Jinjiang, China, where there is a joint-venture repair center established with tier-one partners from the industry. Spirit staff are on the road worldwide, investigating areas that might make sense to establish new regional representation. Do we need to be in South America, have more of a presence in the Middle East, investigate some other Asia Pacific opportunities? Spirit is always looking at the possibilities.

While the aftermarket business involves aluminum, composite, fasteners and all things technical, ultimately the business is a make-or-break proposition based on a critical element: providing good service. When you deal with the aftermarket, you’re dealing with different individuals within the airlines and within the maintenance and repair organizations.

There are lots of people who know the Aftermarket industry and do it well. The people Spirit hired to date have come out of this industry. They’ve been through some of our competitors in sales and marketing roles. Knowing people is the key toward building the relationships you need and getting your foot in the door.

Spirit and Aviall will continue to work together over the next few months to transition the distribution activity, working hard to avoid any confusion during the transition period from a customer’s perspective, it will be “seamless.”

Spirit now directly selling, distributing parts to global aftermarket customers

Spirit announced Dec. 21, 2009, that it has begun to directly sell and distribute international parts, as it has been doing with the domestic market since 2005. In a news release, Spirit said it is responding to customers’ desire to deal directly with Spirit. Spirit’s sales and distribution network has developed and matured since its separation from Boeing in 2005 and the company is now fully capable of engaging directly with international customers.

“We believe it is the right time to strengthen relationships with our international customers by responding directly to their spare parts requirements.” Said Carolyn Harms, Spirit vice president and general manager – Aftermarket Customer Support.

We look forward to offering our international customers the same long term service, low cost parts, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), and product support solutions we currently offer our domestic customers,” Harms said.

Spirit has a comprehensive plan for customer engagement and intends to establish regional centers around the world to be closer to their markets.

This network, together with Spirit’s MRO locations in Wichita, Kan., Prestwick, Scotland, and the joint venture in Jinjiang, China, positions Spirit in close proximity to its worldwide customer base, allowing Spirit to respond quickly and effectively to engaging customer needs.

The transition from Spirit’s current international distributor begins immediately and is projected to be complete by June 30, 2010.  No service interruption is expected.

What we do in MRO
Spirit MRO continues to expand, not just in services provided but also in proximity to customers. We have three sites on three continents, and we continue to develop mropicnew services to meet customer needs.

The Wichita repair station has provided nacelle repair support for several years. Now the station’s capabilities include fuselage doors, structural components, and modification kits, as well as repair of composite contoured components, flight-control devices for service bulletin compliance, and under-wing components for domestic and international customers.

The Prestwick, Scotland, repair station opened in September 2008. This MRO facility performs composite repairs and overhauls for customers in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, currently focusing on engine nacelles and components for Boeing 737NG and 777 aircraft.

In April 2008, Spirit announced a joint venture with Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (HAECO) and other industry partners to establish a state-of-the-art composite and metal bond component repair station in the Asia-Pacific region. Taikoo Spirit, located in Jinjiang, China opened its doors for business in November 2009. In addition to its repair station certifications, Spirit became a part of the Boeing Partners Network of Repair Stations in 2007.

Nacelle expertise is not limited to new production. It also encompasses repair capability. Spirit AeroSystems has the experience and resources to provide repairs on many types of airplane engine nacelles.
